There is no doubt that at some point in your life you have been told that you look like another family member. This could be your mother or father or even your sister or brother. You probably don’t give much thought to this but it actually is because of the genes in your body that you possess that came from your Mom and Dad.
You are most likely familiar with the term DNA. This is a mixture of chromosomes that come from both your parents that are like a package that makes up you. There are actually 23 pairs of chromosomes. These help to determine what colour your hair is going to be as wells as your eyes and even what size your nose will be. The chromosomes are broken down into sections and one of these sections is your genes. You have two pairs of genes with one pair coming from your father and the other pair from your mother.
The genes that you possess are called your genotype, and your genotype that affects the way you look is called your phenotype.
Sometimes things can go wrong with the genes where they become abnormal or mutated. When this happens it can cause many different types of diseases, some of which that can affect your appearance. A good example of this x-linked ectodermal dysplasia (Xlhed). This is where a gene that is connected to the x chromosome has become affected. In some cases, this condition can cause changes in the physical appearance that would not normally be there if the gene were normal.
This gene that is being affected is the one that plays an important role in the way your body handles protein. Protein affects the way your hair grows and how much you have. It affects your nails as well as the formation of your teeth and it also affects the way that your sweat glands work. When the protein is being affected like it is with Xlhed then it affects these components of your body that lend to your physical appearance.
